East Bedroom, Harewood House, Leeds, LS17 9LG
8th September – 19th October 2025
Mon – Sun, 10.30am – 4pm
Super/Market is an augmented reality artwork that reimagines the 18th-century Chinese wallpaper at Harewood House through a contemporary lens. While the wallpaper shows idealised scenes of rice, tea, silk, and porcelain production as symbols of labour and global trade in Qing-era China, the intervention explores the Chinese supermarket as a modern-day site of cultural and economic exchange. Created in collaboration with Chinese-speaking community groups in Leeds, Super/Market reflects on how everyday heritage is transmitted through seasonal food and festivals, within the context of a post-industrial British city. Visitors can view the intervention through their mobile device by scanning the QR code in the East bedroom. A set of augmented reality postcards and a printed catalogue highlight the themes and processes behind the work.
